Introduction

Safety is an important aspect of running any chemical manufacturing plant.  Most processing problems and equipment malfunctions can be adjusted for or repaired in due time, but there are those which require immediate attention because of their danger to the safety of personnel and equipment.  The operator's attitude is an important factor in the safe operation of a plant.

The "safety series" spelled out below, brings out the philosophy of a good safety attitude.

Serious Be serious when you perform your work.  Don't do it in a joking manner; be earnest.
Alert Be wide-awake and watchful so that the smallest interruption of smooth operation will be detected immediately.
Familiar Learn and then remain well acquainted with the plant.  Make sure you are familiar with all things pertaining to your job.
Exact Be accurate and precise when making changes or decisions whether they be big or small and aim for "ZERO DEFECTS".
Think  Try to visualize things that may occur and prepare you to meet them.  Think "FAIL-SAFE".
You You are the person who will make the unit safe and it is you that must strive to have all the qualities necessary to be a safe operator.
