Introduction

Quartz rock is used in the converter to prevent the smaller catalyts particles from falling through the support grids and as a hold-down layer on top of the catalyst to prevent movement of the bed.  The quartz rock used in sulphuric acid plant converters must meet the following requirements:

  • Milled quartzite pebbles 13 to 25 mm (1/2" to 1") in size
  • Natural round or oval in shape.  Flat pieces are not acceptable.
  • The quartz must be cleaned and washed free of sand and dirt.
  • The quartz must be guaranteed to be non-spalling up to 650°C (1202°F)

When specifying the quantity of quartz rock required, allow for a 50 mm (2") layer above and below the catalyst bed.  An extra 5-10% should be specified to account for settling and losses.
