Introduction

The analytical method for the measurement of chloride ion (Cl-) in solution is based on titration against AgNO3 using an ion selective electrode for the end point detection.

Equipment

  • Cl- ion selective electrode, Orion Cl 9417 B
  • Expanded scale pH meter
  • 150 ml beaker

Reagents

 

  • Concentrated HNO3
  • AgNO3 solution, 1 ml = 1 ml Cl-

Procedure

A 1 ml filtered sample is transferred to a 150 ml beaker.  100 ml of distilled water and 5 ml HNO3 added.  Titrate with AgNO3 solution using ion selective electrode to detect the end point.

Calculation

ml AgNO3 x 1000 / 1000 : ml AgNO3 = g/l Cl-
