Introduction

The determination of residue in sulphuric acid is carried out by evaporating and calcining an acid sample to dryness and then directly weighing the residue.

Equipment

  • Balance with 0.0001 gram precision
  • Platinum or silica capsule  (at least 100 ml )
  • Essiccator
  • Furnace

Reagents

None Required

Procedure

Weigh and record the weight of the sample container.  Place approximately 50 grams of acid sample into the capsule, weigh and record the total weight.   Heat the acid sample gently with a Bunsen flame to evaporate the acid.  This procedure should be done under a fume hood.  Calcine at 750°C in furnace.  Cool in essiccator and weigh again.

Calculation

Residue  %   =   GR   /  GA  x  100

where:

GR = weight in grams of residue

GA = weight in grams of acid sample
