Strong Acid System - Acid Pumps - Troubleshooting - Excessive Power Consumption

Probable Cause Possible Solutions
1. Pump speed too high Check voltage and current of each motor phase
2. Total dynamic head too low The static head and pressure drop of the system is less than the total discharge head for which the pump was designed.  The impeller may need to trimmed.

Large pumps (size 10 or greater) are of a design in which maximum power is absorbed at shutoff.  Check the pump curve to ensure that the pump is operating at or near its design rating.
3. Liquid properties Pump will draw more power is the specific gravity or viscosity of the liquid is higher than that for which the pump was designed.   Acid may be colder than normal.
4. Mechanical defects The pump shaft may be bent.  Rotating elements may be binding.   The packing may be too tight.  Bearings may be faulty.  Take the pump out of service and inspect.
5. Impeller diameter too large The impeller may need to be trimmed.
