Materials of Construction - PVDF
April 1, 2003

Common Name PVDF
Chemical Name Polyvinylidene Fluoride
Trade Names KYNAR® (registered trademark of the Penwalt Company)
General

Superior to other thermoplastics in chemical resistance, abrasion resistance and dielectric properties.

No other solid thermoplastic piping components can approach the combination of strength, chemical resistance and working temperature.  Impact strength 3 times that of PVC.  PVDF is non-toxic and imparts no odours or tastes to fluids.   The material can be extruded.  Gas permeability is extremely low.

Excellent chemical resistance to halogens such as chlorine and bromine, strong acids, such as hydrofluoric and nitric acids, organic solvents and oils.

PVDF is joined by the thermo-seal fusion process, threading or flanging.

Application

General

  • Gaskets
  • Pipe liners

Sulphuric Acid Plants

  • Liners for pipes and equipment
  • Free sulphur trioxide (SO3) will attack PVDF.  Therefore, 98% H2SO4 should be considered the absolute maximum concentration to be handled  by PVDF.  Other circumstances where free SO3 may be present should be avoided.
