Materials of Construction - Mondi™

Introduction

Mondi™ is a registered trademark of Monsanto Enviro-chem for their improved ductile iron piping system for strong sulphuric acid (>92% H2SO4).   Mondi™ is a special ductile iron with closely controlled metallurgy and proprietary modifications for improved performance in acid service.   It has improved corrosion resistance to 92-99% acid, at temperatures up to 149°C (300°F).  It is 95% ferrite for excellent performance around anodically protected acid coolers.

Mondi™ piping systems operate at higher velocities than standard ductile and gray cast iron.  Velocities range from 1.2 to 3.0 m/s (4 to 10 ft/s) for 3" to 30" line sizes.

The Mondi™ system not only involves the improved metallurgy but includes the entire piping system such as:

• Specially engineered flange face finish
• Specially design stepped gaskets
• Special Gylon® gasket material that is free of asbestos
• Special PTFE based thread sealant
• Flange bolt tightening procedure
• Shop hydrotesting of all piping components
