General

The only lead smelter in Romania

Sometra Company was founded in 1939 and is the largest zinc and lead metallurgy in Romania.
In November 1998, Mytilineos Holdings SA acquired 57% of the company Sometra Copsa Mica, which reached 88% in the first quarter of 2000 through a share capital increase. The company embarked on its business activities in 1939, yet the most important changes came after 1965 when it obtained full metallurgic equipment. In 1988, it produced in total 35,000 tons of metals annually.

Today, following investments made in the past years, exceeding $30 million, production is expected to stand at 80,000 tons, employing in parallel 1,200 employees. It should be noted that the investment cycle was completed in 2006 for both productivity improvement and production increase by 20-25%, and improvement of environmental operation terms according to European Union directives.

2013 Annual Report, Mytilineos Holdings
News 2013 - The Group, since 2009, applies IFRS 5 “Non-current assets held for sale & discontinues operations”, and presents separately the assets and liabilities of the subsidiary company SOMETRA S.A., following the suspension of the production activity of the Zinc-Lead production plant in Romania, and presents also the amounts recognized in the income statement separately from continuing operations. Given the global economic recession, there were no feasible scenarios for the alternative utilization of the aforementioned financial assets. For that reason the Group plans to abandon the Zinc-Lead production while exploiting the remaining stock of the plan. Consequently, by applying par. 13 of IFRS 5 “Non-current assets Held for Sale” the Zinc-Lead production ceases to be an asset held for sale and is considered as an asset to be abandoned. The assets of the disposal group to be abandoned are presented within the continuing operations while the results as discontinued operations.

2011
- Sometra S.A., which was Romania’s only primary producer of lead and zinc metal, was owned by Mytilineos Holdings S.A. of Greece.  The holding company suspended production in January 2009 and declared in its 2011 annual report that it planned to abandon zinc-lead production while exploiting the remaining stock in the plant (Mytilineos Holdings S.A., 2012, p. 105).

2010
- Sometra S.A., which was Romania’s only primary producer of lead and zinc metal, was owned by Mytilineos Holdings S.A. of Greece.  The company had suspended production in January 2009 owing to reduced demand for its products and to difficulty in obtaining lead and zinc concentrates.  As of December 31, the production facility remained closed, although the company stated that this closure was temporary (Mytilineos Holdings S.A., 2011, p. 30).
