General Located in Yuanqu County, Shanxi Province, ZTS was established in 1956. It has now become a super large-scale, state-owned group with diversified industries such as mining, ore processing and smelting as its main business focus. In addition, it produces cement, electricity, and it manufactures various machinery.
Total assets of the group are about 2.285 billion RMB Yuan. ZTS group owns three copper mines and their general output is the third in north China. The technology of block caving, introduced from the USA, in use in the Tongkuangyu Copper Mine, has helped improve its capabilities to 4,100,000 tons per year and makes it the largest non-coal underground mine in China. Ausmelt technology introduced from Australia in the Houma Smelter has provided a major leap in production volume. Industrial tests of Insitu Leach and the Copper SX-EW Plant were successfully accomplished in 2000, and subsequently put into production. The annual production of capacity of ZTS is 5,100,000 tons of copper, 5,800,000 tons of processed ore, 30,000 tons of copper concentrates, 62,000 tons of blister copper, 150,000 tons of sulphuric acid, 20,000 tons of copper cathode, and 130,000 tons of cement. Its main products include crude copper, electrolytic copper, copper wires and copper concentrates, etc. Among them, Zhongtiaosan No. 1 Electrolytic Copper, has been registered in the Shanghai Futures Exchange.
ZTS will improve its smelting capability, diversify its products, and develop its non-copper businesses in the tenth five-year plan to realize its vision of achieving annual turnover of 3 billion Yuan with profits of 200 million RMB Yuan.

China United Copper Co., Ltd. (CUC) www.cucltd.com

China United Copper Co., Ltd. (CUC) was established on 15 March, 2002 in Beijing, China. CUC is a jointly owned company, and was co-founded by China Minmetals Non-ferrous Co., Ltd. and the five backbone smelters in China: Jiangxi Copper Co., Tongling Non-ferrous Metals (Group) Co., Ltd., Yunnan Copper (Group), Ltd., Daye Non-ferrous Metals Co., Ltd., and Shanxi Zhongtiaoshan Non-ferrous Metals (Group) Co., Ltd. The registered capital is 10 million RMB Yuan.
This is the first time for the Chinese copper industry to organize the six industry-giants into an alliance to deal with non-domestic entities and projects. It marks a new milestone for China's copper industry.
CUC's aim is to unify Chinese copper smelters from separate business units into a strong business alliance for the negotiation and import of copper concentrate. Such a strategic action ensures the partners' common interests, namely creating a harmonized "voice" in negotiations with foreign mine-owners concerning joint exploitation and development of overseas mines. The result is the strategic stabilization of raw material supplies for China's domestic smelters, by obtaining the long-term overseas sources. This is a historical moment for our cooper industry, a turning point from short-term and spot copper purchases toward mid-term/long-term and strategic purchases. In addition, the joint development of new overseas copper mine resources will lead toward the realization of long term security.
