General Pyrites, Phosphates and Chemicals Limited (PPCL) was set in March, 1960 initially as a subsidiary of National Industrial Development Corporation Limited. It is engaged in: (I) mining of pyrites deposits and manufacture of single superphosphate (SSP) fertilizer at Amjhore in Bihar, (ii) exploratory-cum-production mining of pyrites deposits at saladipura in Rajasthan, and (iii) mining of rock phosphate ore from Mussoorie phospharite deposits in Doon Valley in Uttar Pradesh. Pyrites is used as a substitute sulphur source in the manufacture of sulphuric acid and also for soil amendment. The rock phosphate mined from Mussoorie deposits is powdered and supplied for direct application as a source of P2O5 in acidic soils. As sulphur and rock phosphate are imported, the activities of the company are significant in terms of saving of the precious foreign exchange.
