News	February 14, 2019 - China's Jinduicheng Molybdenum, or JDC, has suspended operation of two rotary kilns, potentially impacting production of molybdenum products, following an accident Tuesday at a sulfur acid plant outside its main roasting facility in northwestern China's Shaanxi province, the company said Thursday in a filing to the Shanghai Stock The company did not elaborate on how the suspension of the rotary kilns would impact the moly oxide output volume, but it said other production operations remain normal.JDC's roaster has two furnaces and two rotary kilns, and can produce 40,000 mt/year of moly oxide, 20,000 mt/year of ferromolybdenum, 200,000 mt/year of sulfuric acid and 54,000 mt/year of wet gas sulfuric acid. Chemical moly products -- 16,500 mt/year of chemical product ammonium molydbate, 4,200 mt/year of moly powder and 900 mt/year of moly rod and wire -- are produced at another facility using moly oxide from the affected roaster as feedstock, according to market sources."As the incident is classified as general accident, it is not expected to have major impact on the company's production, operation, and profits. It is expected the rectification of the accident would be completed by the end of this month. But a firm date to resuming full production of the plant would hinge on the progress of investigation and securing necessary approvals from the government authorities," JDC said.On Tuesday afternoon, an explosion involving a water tank at a sulfuric acid plant killed one worker and injured three others, according to a report posted on the Weinan local government website.If JDC continues to run the roaster at lower rates for some time, it has the option to ask other producers in Shaanxi and Liaoning provinces to produce moly oxide, ferromoly and other products on its behalf, sources said.JDC sources moly conc, the basic feedstock, from its own mines in Shaanxi province, as well as from third-party mines in northeastern China, according to sources. JDC typically provides conc supplies to other producers to be processed into other products, said a Chinese producer who has engaged in tolling negotiations with JDC.JDC's ferromoly is mostly used by domestic steelmakers, while ITS chemical moly, which is used as a catalyst for oil refining, is exported, they said.There are more than a dozen ferromoly producers in China and they could cover if JDC was forced to cut output, sources said. But there are only a handful of Chinese chemical moly producers and a reduction of JDC's output may have wider impact internationally.In 2018, Japan imported around 2,000 mt of chemical moly products from China, according to Japanese customs statistics. JDC has the longest supply record in Japan among Chinese producers, and is believed to have a significant share of the 2,000 mt/year market, said several Japanese market sources. JDC also exports chemical moly products to Europe, sources said.
