General	Coromandel Fertilisers Limited (CFL) incorporated in 1964, now belonging to the Rs 9582 crores (USD $ 2.4 Billion) Murugappa Group, is a leading company in India manufacturing a wide range of fertilisers and pesticides (technical and formulations). CFL markets around 2.5 million tonnes of phosphatic fertilisers making it a leader in its addressible markets and the second largest phosphatic fertiliser player in India. The Company also markets phosphogypsum and sulphur pastilles. News	December 27, 2023 - The Tamil Nadu government has temporarily suspended the operation of the Coromandel International plant at Ennore near Chennai after an ammonia leak at its facility late at night on Tuesday. All manufacturing activities of the fertilizer manufacturing plant have been suspended after the incident, except the Sulphuric acid unit which couldn't be immediately shut down, according to state environment minister SV Meyyanathan. The gas leak happened in the subsea pipeline outside the plant premises, which is used to carry ammonia from the ship. It happened during the pre-cooling process in the pipeline, done to pump ammonia in liquid form. Coromandel International's stock price dropped 34 rupees (-2.71%) from Rs 1262.05 to Rs 1227.80 as of 12.50 pm. It opened at Rs 1270 and fell to Rs 1217.35 on intraday trade. "As part of routine operation, we noticed an abnormality on 26th December at 11.30 pm in the ammonia unloading subsea pipeline near shoreside," Coromandel International said in a statement on Wednesday. "Our Standard Operating Procedure activated immediately, and we isolated the ammonia system facility and brought the situation to normalcy in the shortest time," it added. According to the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, the ammonia level in the ambient air was 3ppm at 3:30 am. Residents have complained about breathing difficulties and irritation in the eyes and throat. The company said, "During the process, few members in the local community expressed discomfort and were given medical attention immediately. All are safe and normalcy is restored. We have informed relevant authorities about the incident. Coromandel has always adhered to the highest safety standards and emergency response system." TNIE has sent a detailed query to the company regarding closure and safety audits. The material will be updated once get a response. Meanwhile, locals in the Ennore neighbourhood are staging a protest for the permanent closure of the plant. It is important to note, the oil spill from Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited, a subsidiary of Indian Oil Corporation and other industries happened in the same area on December 5th. Minister SV Meyyanathan said the government would do a thorough inspection of infrastructure with experts, review safety audits and disaster mitigation plans of the Red category industry in Ennore. April 27, 2020 - Indian fertilizer importer and manufacturer Coromandel International (CIL) has restarted production at one unit, following the reduction in output at the end of March amid Covid-19 restrictions. CIL announced that it has partially commenced operations at its Visakhapatnam fertilizer unit and that its Kakinada facility is still running, according to a stock exchange filing on 25 April. The firm is one of the largest domestic suppliers of phosphate-based fertilizers in India, having produced 2.94mn t in 2018-19, according to its annual report. It produced 561,000t of SSP in the same period from eight production locations. It has a total annual capacity of 3.5mn t of phosphate fertilizer, which includes DAP, SSP and NPKs, the report says. Its major phosphate plants are in southeast India, in Kakinada and Visakhapatnam, both located in Andhra Pradhesh, and two at Ennore and Ranipet in Tamil Nadu. CIL reduced manpower at its NPK facilities on 23 March in light of the Indian government's inital plan for a 15-day lockdown on 24 March to curb the spread of coronavirus. CIL then suspended operations at its NPK plants at Ennore and Visakhapatnam on 26 March. The government has since extended the lockdown until 3 May. CIL's shutdown came amid a slew of closures announced by Indian fertilizer producers at the end of March, with fellow suppliers IFFCO, Deepak, PPL, Fact, GSFC, RCF, Smartchem and Greenstar announcing plant closures or reduced operating rates. The announcement of CIL's resumption follows an uptick in raw materials purchases earlier this month. CIL has been active in securing prompt sulphuric acid at negative cfr prices. The producer was coming out of planned maintenance when lockdowns were imposed and, despite the various disruptions, discharge of sulphuric acid at Vizag and Kakinada has not been affected. CIL is still receiving its contracted ammonia shipments from suppliers, with a further 5,000t scheduled for early-May delivery. CIL sources phosphoric acid as a raw material for production from a wide array of origins, most notably Morocco's OCP. CIL received 983,000t of phosphoric acid last year, of which OCP shipped 454,000t, according to Argus' data. But OCP reports that April-loading phosphoric acid shipments to India have largely ground to a halt following the drop in phosphates production and has accordingly sought to granulate more DAP for Indian consumption. CIL bought 50,000t of Moroccan DAP for May arrival to offset its lowered output. www.argusmedia.com September 21, 2007 - India’s Coromandel Fertilisers Limited (CFL) will expand its ammonium phosphate sulphate plant to 330,000 tonnes/year from 170,000 tonnes/year at Ennore in Tamilnadu, a government official associated with the project said on Friday. The government has also granted environmental approval to the company to expand its phosphoric acid capacity at the site to 66,000 tonnes/year from 35,800 tonnes/year. CFL would also expand sulphuric acid plant to 280,450 tonnes/year from 181,000 tonnes/year. The official did not provide additional information on the project. CFL has separately told its shareholders the company’s profitability would increase substantially after merger of its 75% owned subsidiary Godavari Fertilisers and Chemicals Limited (GFCL). In its merger scheme issued to shareholders and lenders for their approval at separate meetings on 8 October, CFL said: “Considerable synergies of operations would be achieved resulting in economies of scale, effective coordination and better control over the said activities (operations of the post-merger entity). Reduction of overheads and administrative expenses would allow optimum utilisation of resources. CFL also operates fertiliser plants at Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, Ranipet and three pesticide plants at Thane in Maharashtra, Ankleshwar in Gujarat and at Ranipet.GFCL operates a fertiliser complex at Kakinada.
