Background AIM owns a 73% interest in Copebrás SA, which operates a phosphate mine and processing plant at Catalão in the state of Goiás, Brazil and a processing plant in Cubatão near the port of Santos in the state of São Paulo. Copebrás was founded in 1955 with carbon black plant production starting in 1958. Sodium Tripolyphosphate (STPP) and fertiliser production began in 1976. In 1983 Copebrás and Fosfago (Phosphate Rock Mine) merged, with Anglo American acquiring control of Copebrás two years later in 1985. In 1998 the carbon black unit was sold to the Columbian Chemicals Company and in 2003 a major phosphate processing complex was inaugurated in Catalão.

Copebrás is one of only three major phosphate producers in Brazil. At its processing plants, Copebrás produces intermediate fertilisers, DCP and STPP - of which Copebrás is the local market leader. Copebrás also produces phosphoric acid, which is used mainly in the production of fertilisers, DCP and STPP but is also sold independently to third parties.
