News April 25, 2023 - Kazatomprom national atomic company has received a certificate of state registration for a new enterprise Taiqonyr Qyshqyl Zauyty to build a sulfuric acid plant in the Sozak district of the Turkistan Region, the company’s press service announced on April 24.  Located near mines, the plant will allow Kazatomprom to have an additional reliable and long-term source of acid supplies, and to optimize delivery routes, minimize cost increases, and reduce the cost of uranium products.  The enterprise is expected to produce 800,000 tonnes of sulfuric acid per year, generating 25-30 megawatt-hours of electricity from heat utilization, most of which will be sold to Kazatomprom’s subsidiaries in the energy-deficient region.  “A feasibility study of the project is currently under completion, while selecting a potential investor is underway. The final cost of the project will be determined after approval of the design and estimate documentation. The construction of the sulfuric acid plant is planned to begin in 2024, with the start of production and achievement of full design capacity slated for 2026,” reads the press statement.  From a strategic standpoint, the project is crucial for both Kazatomprom and the Turkistan Region. The plant for producing sulfuric acid, the principal reagent used in its in-situ leach uranium operations, will significantly contribute to the region’s social and economic development, attract additional investment, and provide tax revenue for the local budget.  The project will generate 800 new construction jobs and roughly 500 new operational jobs.  Kazatomprom is the world’s largest uranium producer, with natural uranium production in proportion to the company’s participatory interest of about 22 percent of the total global primary uranium production in 2022.  The group has the largest uranium reserve base in the industry. Kazatomprom, with subsidiaries, affiliates, and joint organizations, is developing 26 deposits combined into 14 uranium mining enterprises.

- Turkmenabat chemical plant of the state concern "Turkmenhimiya" has increased production and since the beginning of the year has produced more than 134 thousand tons of phosphorous mineral fertilizers, the newspaper "Neutral Turkmenistan" reports.  The increase in fertilizer output is the result of the updated sulfuric acid plant, which was put into operation in 2016. More than a hundred people work here on automated modern equipment equipped with all necessary communications.  Lumpy sulfur obtained in the process of natural gas purification at two gas processing plants on the opposite right Bank of the Amu Darya serves as the main raw material for the enterprise. Its transportation was greatly facilitated after the launch of the modern Turkmenabat–Farab road bridge. Lumpy sulfur goes through all stages of processing to then turn into a valuable product: melting, and conversion under the influence of steam to a liquid state, cleaning in filters to remove mechanical impurities, burning in the furnace compartment at a temperature of 1100 degrees, lowering the gas temperature in the steam turbine generator to the necessary technical parameters, the oxidation process using a catalyst. At the end of the technological process, sulfuric acid is formed, which is transported in the form of a solution through pipes to the shop for the production of granular ammonium superphosphate. This much-needed mineral fertilizer for agriculture is obtained by decomposing sulfuric acid, phosphoric flour coming from Kazakhstan and neutralizing free acids with synthetic ammonia. Excess sulfuric acid in the form of a light oily liquid is transported to four tanks with a capacity of 5 thousand tons each.  The design capacity of the complex allows not only to fully satisfy the domestic market, but also to ship abroad on request. And with the arrival at the plant of two dozen specially manufactured wagons with a capacity of 65 tons, there is an opportunity for large export deliveries.  Sulfuric acid is necessary not only in the production of mineral fertilizers, but also for medicines, detergents, dyes, artificial fibers, used in the technology of refining petroleum products, as well as in metallurgy – for the decomposition of ore.

- Ashgabat has hosted an International Scientific Conference “Turkmenistan's Chemical Industry on the Path of Progress”, the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reported.  Prospects of production of mineral fertilizers and other products, strengthening and expanding partnership ties, exchange of experience and training of personnel will be considered during the conference.  The event is designed to strengthen the Turkmen economic potential and expand the export capabilities of the industry.  Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov has sent his greetings to the participants of the conference.  “It is impossible to imagine the daily life of people, the economic growth of the country without the products of the chemical industry,” he said. “Therefore, taking into account the important tasks facing the industry, the Turkmen state makes enormous efforts to support the activities of the domestic chemical industry, first of all by creating big modern facilities and modernization of the existing production facilities in accordance with the modern requirements.”  Representatives of about 40 foreign companies and firms will take part in the event, including Mitsubishi Corporation and Kawasaki Plant Systems Ltd (Japan), Samsung and LG International Corporation (South Korea), Shell International B.V. (Netherlands), MAN Diesel & Turbo SE (Germany), Haldor Topsoe A/S (Denmark), Oxbow Sulfur & Fertilizer Sarl (Switzerland).  The structure of Turkmenistan’s Turkmenhimiya State Concern includes ten facilities. The main products manufactured by the facilities of the industry are intended for the agro-industrial complex of the country.  Ammonium-carbamide complexes are successfully operated in the Turkmen cities of Tejen and Mary, according to the report.  Based on the contract signed with a consortium of Mitsubishi Corporation (Japan) and GAP Insaat Yatirim ve Dis Ticaret A.S. (Turkey), construction of the third big ammonium-carbamide complex with a capacity of 1.155 million tons of carbamide per year is nearing completion in the Garabogaz city of the Balkan province. Turkmenhimiya State Concern is working to develop the production of potash fertilizers.  In March 2017, the Garlyk potash fertilizer plant was commissioned. The program for the development of the chemical industry envisages construction of new facilities for the production of potash fertilizers at the Karabil and Tyubegatan deposits.  In order to expand the production of phosphate fertilizers at the Turkmenabat chemical plant, a sulfuric acid plant with capacity of 500,000 tons per year was commissioned in July 2016. Turkmenistan occupies one of the leading positions in the world in terms of reserves of hydro-mineral raw materials, and in particular iodine and its derivatives, the report said.In the near future, it is planned to start construction of new plants for the production of iodine, bromine and their derivatives in the Balkan province of Turkmenistan.  The promising sphere of the chemical industry development includes production of household chemicals, organic polymers such as polypropylene, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, as well as carbamide-formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde resins and various paints on their basis, adhesives, construction and other materials.

July 19, 2016
- Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (President: Takao Tanaka) has been constructing a sulfuric acid production facility (annual production amount: 500,000 tons) following an order in September 2013 from Turkmenhimiya State Concern, Turkmenistan’s state petrochemical company.  We are pleased to announce that construction is complete and the plant was handed over in June 2016. On July 7, a grand completion ceremony was held in the presence of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow.  In this project, Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding has been responsible for the design and procurement outside Turkmenistan, while Renaissance Construction (Turkey), a co-contractor, has performed the construction work.  In addition, export finance from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) was used and the project was covered by insurance from Nippon Export and Investment Insurance (NEXI). The order and contract of this project was processed with the support of Sojitz Corporation.  The construction of the sulfuric acid production facility was performed as part of a project to manufacture fertilizer from natural gas. Turkmenistan, which boasts the world's fourth-largest reserve of natural gas, is aiming to enter the resource processing field. This is expected to help ease the country’s heavy dependence on the export of natural gas and develop its industry by improving the added value of natural gas. There are also strong expectations that it will promote the cultivation of cotton, one of the major products in Turkmenistan and surrounding countries.  Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding has a strong track record in EPC in the field of inorganic chemicals such as sulfuric acid. Following this project, we intend to work on similar projects in the future.

July 10, 2016
- A workshop for the production of 500,000 tons of sulfuric acid per year was commissioned at a chemical plant in Turkmenabat town, Lebap region, Turkmenistan, the Turkmen government’s report said.  According to the report, the project was implemented by a consortium consisting of Japanese Mitsui company and Turkish Rönesans company.  "The design capacity of the workshop is not only to fully meet the country’s domestic demand for high-quality sulfuric acid but also supply most of products for export," the report said.  Sulfuric acid is an important component in the production of mineral phosphate fertilizers. This chemical is also used in the production of other acids and salts, medicaments and detergents, dyes, synthetic fibers.  Chemical industry is one of the most promising sectors of the Turkmen economy. The priority is to increase capacity for the production of various types of fertilizers.

January 6, 2014
- Production infrastructure of Turkmenabat chemical plant will be replenished with manufacture for production of sulfuric acid with capacity of 500,000 tons per year. As Turkmenistan.ru reported, corresponding decree was signed by President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.  During a recent meeting of the Government of Turkmenistan President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov was informed on the progress of work on concluding Agreement on construction of a sulfuric acid production workshop at the Turkmenabat chemical plant with authoritative international companies. According to the Turkmenhimiya State Concern such long-term partners of Turkmenistan in the sphere of construction of large industrial facilities as Mitsui Engineering & Shipbulding Co., Ltd (Japan) and Rönesans Türkmen Inşaat Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş. (Turkey) expressed their interest in implementation of this significant project.  Moreover, the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) that highly appreciates the prospects of joint cooperation due to the “open-door” policy pursued by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and favourable investment climate created in the country for foreign partners demonstrates keen interest in investing the project.  A high level of professionalism and qualification of foreign partners in this field is proved by the fact that Mitsui Inginiring & Shipbulding Co., Ltd has experience in construction of over 70 similar modern plants on production of sulfuric acid in Japan and many other countries. The Japanese company applies the most advanced technologies that are used in most sulfuric acid plants in the US and about a half of similar plants throughout the world.  As is known, Mitsui Inginiring & Shipbulding Co., Ltd uses a generally accepted license technology of the Monsanto Company (the US). According to the project, a new sulfuric acid production workshop will consist of a single technological line of the double absorption process with a continuous production capacity of 1,500 metric tons of sulfuric acid per day. The workshop will work round-the-clock 333 working days a year.  Speaking about the significance of this large investment project for the national economy of our country, it should be noted that the Turkmenabat chemical plant producing phosphate fertilizers and sulfuric acid is the only producer of this type of fertilizers in Turkmenistan. The main product manufactured at the plant is phosphate fertilizer - ammonium superphosphate that contains phosphorus and nitrogen. This valuable fertilizer is of great demand among the agricultural workers of our country.  The existing sulfuric acid production plant with the project capacity of 500,000 tons per year was put into operation in 1985. Due to the long-term operation in corrosive medium the basic technological units and equipment do not satisfy the modern requirements.  The Programme on developing Lebap Velayat within the framework of the National Programme on the socio-economic development of Turkmenistan for 2011-2030 envisages reconstruction and modernization of the phosphate fertilizers production with increase in production of ammonium superphosphate up to 300,000 tons per year, as well as construction of a new sulfuric acid plant with the annual production capacity of 500,000 tons at the Turkmenabat chemical plant affiliated to the Turkmenhimiya State Concern.  Construction of a new sulfuric acid plant is designed for the future. The programme on development of the chemical industry in 2016 – 2019 envisages production of 200,000-250,000 tons of potassium sulphate per year, where sulfuric acid and potassium chloride will be used as the main raw materials.  The availability and efficiency of this new production capacity of the national chemical industry is caused by the fact that part of sulfuric acid produced in Turkmenistan can be exported.

December 8, 2013 - The shop producing sulphuric acid with the annual capacity of 500.000 tons is to expand production infrastructure of Turkmenabat chemical plant. The State Development Bank of Turkmenistan will issue a loan to the Turkmenhimiya State Concern to partially finance the project implemented by the consortium of foreign companies.  Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (Japan) and Ronesans Turkmen Insaat Sanayi we Ticaret A.S. (Turkey) launched construction works in September 2013. The shop producing sulphuric acid is to be put into operation in July 2016.  The need to build the shop producing is based on the fact that sulphuric acid is difficult to transport, unload and prepare for manufacture. For these reasons, the price for imported sulphuric acid is higher than that produced domestically. Sulphuric acid is used for manufacturing mineral fertilizers, processing liquid fuels, refining mineral oils as well as in the metallurgical, textile, leather and other industries.
