| General | The
Ausmelt technology zinc fuming plant will recover lead and zinc to a high
grade fume by using two Ausmelt furnaces to process up to 100,000 tpa of
zinc residues generated from Young Poong’s existing operations. Founded in 1949, Young
Poong, Corp. was Korea’s main exporter of zinc concentrate in the 1960s. In
order to break Korea’s heavy reliance on imported zinc ingots, Young Poong,
Corp. established a zinc refinery in Sukpo, Bongwhagun, Gyungsangbukdo in
1970, emerging as a leading manufacturer of non-ferrous metals. |

Police and fire authorities will conduct a joint
inspection to determine the cause of the fire at the Young Poong Seokpo
smelter in Bonghwa County, North Gyeongsang. The North Gyeongsang
Provincial Police Agency said it will visit the fire scene at the Seokpo
smelter in Seokpo-myeon, Bonghwa County, with fire authorities at 11:30 a.m.
on the 10th, the second day after the blaze, to conduct an inspection. The
inspection will cover the sulfuric acid production facilities and the air
dust collection facilities inside the Seokpo smelter, where the fire is
presumed to have started. Police plan to examine the site conditions and
secure witness statements to identify the exact ignition point and the
circumstances of the fire. If the results of this inspection indicate
that additional investigation is needed to determine the cause of the fire,
a second joint inspection will also be conducted with the National Forensic
Service. A police official said, "We are conducting a joint inspection
because the scene has been secured after the fire was extinguished," and
noted, "We plan to focus investigative resources on confirming the cause of
the fire and other details."At about 12:36 p.m. on the 9th, a fire broke out
in the sulfuric acid production equipment inside Plant 1 at the Seokpo
smelter. After receiving the report, fire authorities issued Response Level
1 and began suppression operations, and the fire was fully put out at about
6:45 p.m. After the fire, a site investigation by the Daegu Regional
Environmental Office found no casualties and confirmed no release of
hazardous substances. July 9, 2026 - A fire broke out at the Seokpo Smelter in Bonghwa County, North Gyeongsang Province, on the 9th, prompting fire authorities to issue a Level 1 response and begin extinguishing operations. A Level 1 response involves mobilizing all personnel and equipment from the local fire station. According to the North Gyeongsang Fire Department and other sources, the fire was reported at approximately 12:36 p.m. local time on the 9th. A fire official explained, “We issued a Level 1 response to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby mountainous areas.” No casualties have been confirmed as of yet.The fire originated in an internal facility of the plant, where hazardous materials are stored, raising concerns about the potential release of toxic gases. A fire department official stated, “We have identified the fire as originating from the sulfuric acid manufacturing section of the smelter.”
