News April 9, 2009 - China reported that the net profit of gold smelter Shandong Humon Smelting reached CNY 187.8 million last year jumping by 79.38% on an annual basis.  Humon Smelting's operating revenue expanded by 67.42%YoY to CNY 2.13 billion in 2008. The company attributed both increases to higher gold prices, growing gold output, as well as record-high prices of sulfuric acid, a by-product from gold smelting, during the first three quarters of 2008.  Humon Smelting generated sales revenue of CNY 1.57 billion by selling its entire gold output through the Shanghai Gold Exchange last year, where the average gold price for 2008 was CNY 194.04 per gram, up 11.08%YoY.  Looking ahead to 2009, the company expects to generate operating revenue of CNY 2.49 billion and a net profit of CNY 150 million and will be hampered to an extent by the sluggish metals market and the Chinese economy. In the coming years, Humon Smelting aims to expand its production capacity and secure additional gold resources through ongoing exploration and acquisitions of local miners.   It currently owns exploration rights to a gold deposit spanning 31.07 square kilometers as well as mining rights to a 3.38-square kilometer area. As it only held 15.17 tons of proven gold reserves at the end of 2006, the company has to purchase the majority of the raw material it requires for its gold smelting operations.  Shandong-based Humon Smelting has an annual output capacity of 8 tons of gold, 40 tonnes of silver, 2,000 tonnes of refined copper, 400,000 tonnes of sulfuric acid, as well as 19,000 tonnes of various chemicals. The company raised CNY 610 million through its initial public offering in May 2008, and used the funds to finance a technical upgrade project that is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year to improve recycling of complex gold ore concentrate.
