General The Hinojedo plant dates from 1929 and is situated 5 km north of Torrelavega, on the left bank of the estuary of San Martín. It has its own port facilities.

The Hinojedo roasting plant is located near the port of Santander in Cantabria. Zinc concentrates are processed by this plant to obtain calcine and liquid SO2. Its main facilities are a flash roaster and equipment to liquefy the sulphur dioxide produced by the roaster.  Following cessation of mining activity at the Xstrata Group’s former Reocín mine in Cantabria, which closed in 2003, concentrates purchased from third parties are being treated at the Hinojedo facility to produce calcine which is then transported to the San Juan de Nieva and Nordenham electrolytic zinc plants.
