News March 21, 2019 - An investigation is underway after a fatal explosion in a gas tank at a fertilizer plant owned by Egypt's El Nasr Company for Intermediate Chemicals (NCIC) in Ain El Sokhna, local sources confirmed on Thursday.  The blast is believed to have happened during a trial operation at one of the plant's ammonia tanks, said local media reports.  Up to 10 workers are believed to have been killed and seven others injured, according to the reports.  The victims were taken to the Suez General Hospital and the company is now investigating the cause of the fire, said a media report.  No official statement is available from the company.  The explosion is understood to have occurred at NCIC’s new phosphates and compound fertilizer complex, which began production earlier this year, but is expected to be begin full scale operations in late 2019, said a local source.  The facility is estimated to have an annual capacity of 450,000 tonnes of phosphoric acid, 360,000 tonnes of diammonium phosphate (DAP), 225,000 tonnes of Triple Super Phosphate (TSP) and 1.14m tonnes of sulphuric acid.  German engineering company thyssenkrupp on 17 March signed a contract with NCIC to construct a nitrogen plant near Cairo, Egypt, it said on Monday.  The new nitrogen facility is close to NCIC’s phosphates and compound fertilizer complex. Thyssenkrupp is not involved in the phosphates project.  The nitrogen plant is expected to be operational in 2022 and will have an annual production of up to 440,000 tonnes of ammonia, 380,000 tonnes of urea and 300,000 tonnes of calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN).

June 2, 2016
- Outotec awarded a sulfuric acid technology contract from Intecsa Industrial, Spain.  Outotec has agreed with the Spanish engineering company Intecsa Industrial, part of ACS Group, on the design and delivery of process technology and proprietary equipment for two sulfuric acid plants to be built in connection with the El Nasr Co. for Intermediate Chemicals (NCIC) fertilizer plant in Egypt. The order is valued at over EUR 30 million and has been booked in Outotec's 2016 second quarter order intake.  The two new sulfuric acid plants designed by Outotec, each with a capacity of 1,900 tonnes per day, will produce high grade sulfuric acid from elemental sulfur for fertilizer production and steam for energy generation. The plants will meet all the current and planned Egyptian environmental requirements. In order to recover as much energy as possible, the heat recovery system uses the surplus heat of the waste heat boiler and absorption section and turns it into low- and high-pressure steam.  The sulfuric acid plants are expected to be operational in 2018.  "We are pleased to be involved in the NCIC fertilizer project through our partner Intecsa Industrial. Outotec's advanced sulfuric acid plant solution will be the key part of the fertilizer production complex and enable efficient use of resources with minimal environmental impact," says Pertti Korhonen, President and CEO of Outotec.

February 9, 2016
- On February 9, 2016, in Cairo NCIC and Intecsa Industrial have signed the Contract for the development of a Sulphuric Acid Plant, and a DAP  & TSP Plant. Both Plants will be built at Ain Sohkna located in the Gulf of Suez in the northeastern part of Egypt.  The scope of work of this “Turnkey” Contract comprise the basic and detail engineering, supply of equipment and materials as well as the construction, including erection, commissioning and start-up of both Plants.  With the development of this new DAP Plant Intecsa Indsutrial will maintain the worldwide leadership in the execution of DAP Plant Contracts.  This Contract represents half of the total Fertilizers Complex to be built at Ain Sohkna, which will be the biggest complex ever built in Egypt in the fertilizers sector.

November 2, 2015 - President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi approved the establishment of a phosphate and fertiliser factory cluster, supervised by El-Nasr Company for Intermediate Chemicals, according to presidential spokesperson Alaa Yousef.  Yousef said the cluster will include nine major factories with a production capacity of 1m tonnes per year of phosphate and compound fertilisers, Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP) and pure and commercial phosphoric acid.  On Sunday, President Al-Sisi met with the chief financial officer of the armed forces, the Chairman of the National Service Projects Organisation, the Chairman of El-Nasr Company for Intermediate Chemicals, and company representatives to build the largest cluster of phosphate and fertilisers in Ain Sokhna.  Yousef added that all aspects pertaining to the contract were discussed. The project will be implemented by three companies specialised in building the largest phosphate fertiliser factories in the world using Italian, Spanish and Chinese technology.  Yousef said the cluster will meet the domestic market needs and the surplus will be exported abroad.  “The president stressed the importance of moving forward in the implementation of the project at the lowest possible cost in the shortest possible time and with the highest standards of quality,” said Yousef.  “The project will contribute to meeting the fertiliser needs of farmers with an appropriate cost and increase Egyptian exports, as well as to achieve the desired increase in agricultural production, and to make social and economic benefit by creating employment.”
