| General |
The smelter was originally commissioned in 1956 with one green feed
reverberatory furnace, three Pierce-Smith converter, two anode vessels and
one anode casting wheel.  It was expanded in the late 1960's and early 70's
to a three reverberatory furnace, six converter operation with four anode
vessels and two anode casting wheels.  In 1974, in response to the newly
promulgated Clean Air Act, a two train Monsanto acid plant was constructed
to treat converter offgas.  In 1988, the three reverberatory furnaces were
replaced by a single 3000 tpd Outokumpu flash furnace as the result of a
consent decree negotiated between the EPA and Magma. BHP Billiton has closed the final chapter on its disastrous $3.2 billion acquisition of the US copper group Magma Copper. The sorry saga ended with the group's announcement yesterday that Magma's San Manuel copper smelter in Arizona would be scrapped. The smelter was the jewel in the crown of what was once the prized acquisition of Magma in 1996. At the time of the San Manuel closure, copper was trading in a range of US60¢ to US65¢ a pound. That compares with current prices of about US90¢ a pound and the copper price at the time of acquisition of $US1.32 a pound. On January 17, 2007 at 13:00, BHP's Magma
Copper Company demolished the twin 500+ ft smokestacks that stood for more
than 50 years and served as iconic beacons for both the mining company and
the small town of San Manuel. The demolition marked the end of an era for
