See Sen Chemical Berhad (See Sen) is the largest manufacturer of sulphuric
acid in Malaysia. The company also produces derivatives of sulphur as listed
here. The
company's manufacturing facilities are located at Pasir Gudang (Johor) and
Kemaman (Terengganu) respectively. The Kemaman plant is world-scale and
utilizes imported Australian technology. See Sen was established in 1967 and originally operated out of a site in Larkin Industrial Estate, Johor. Batu Kawan Berhad became the company's principal shareholder in 1983. In 1984, the new management commissioned a new acid plant in Pasir Gudang, Johor and the Larkin operation was eventually sold. The Kemaman plant was started-up in 1997. As with MSCI, the sales and distribution of the company's products are undertaken by Taiko Marketing Sdn. Bhd. |
| News | May 22, 2000 - Malaysia has prioritised investigations into a recent chemical leak in Terengganu, said an official from the Department of Safety and Health. The leak at See Sen Chemical's sulphuric acid plant in Teluk Kalong, caused toxic sulphur dioxide fumes to be emitted earlier this month. Inhalation of the fumes resulted in 12 passersby receiving outpatient treatment for dizziness and nausea. According to the environment impact assessment (EIA) unit, the leak was caused by a technical hitch in the startup procedure. See Sen immediately halted the plant's operations, but declined to comment. The EIA unit has ordered See Sens Chemical to install detection equipment to monitor the sulphur dioxide emissions from the plant. The EIA will record these emissions. The EIA unit said it is not the first time such an accident had happened, but declined to elaborate. |
